Franco Lamanna out of the World Cup

The dream of a third Rugby World Cup is over for Franco Lamanna. The Uruguayan will sit out Rugby World Cup 2023. His name was notably missing from Los Teros’ extended training roster named this week.

Lamanna’s rugby career has come to an early end under unfortunate circumstances. He tested positive for caroxy-THC, a banned substance. He received a three-year-ban in Italy where he plays professionally for Mogliano. The ban is scheduled to conclude on October 20, 2026 when Lamanna will be aged 35.

He tested positive as a result of taking medication to deal with insomnia problems. His mental health shattered, the truly heartbroken Lamanna is now trying to clear his name in Italy. It was all the harder for a player who was unable to sleep, often only getting four hours of sleep a week.

Lamanna had been on the radar for Rugby World Cup 2023. He will now participate only from the sidelines. The 32-year-old played at Rugby World Cups 2015 and 2019. He also had a lengthily career as a professional player abroad.

The native of Montevideo played for Carrasco Polo before beginning his career in Europe in 2014. H played for CUS Perugia in Italy’s Serie A and for Recco. He also played for Mazamet in France and for Darlington Mowden Park in England before returning to Italy. He played in the Italian Top 10 for Mogliano.
