MLR Notes: Imhoff re-signs with Dallas, Roura and Torres depart

The Dallas Jackals now have two players signed up for the 2024 Major League Rugby campaign. Following Sam Golla’s extension signed late in the regular season, the club has re-signed former Pumas scrumhalf Pedro Imhoff for a second season. The 34-year-old will be hoping for better health next year as injuries limited him to 9 starts for the club in 2023.

Meanwhile the Jackals have bid farewell to a pair of their best players who are off to Italy. Loose forward Conrado Roura has signed for newly-promoted Vicenza, now known as the Rangers, while versatile back Alejandro Torres will join CUS Torino. Both clubs are in the Serie A, the top Italian domestic division.

At least two MLR players will suit up for the Tel Aviv Heat in this year’s Rugby Europe Super Cup. Rugby ATL scrumhalf Niall Saunders and Seattle Seawolves flyhalf Jordan Chait have been confirmed as returning to Israel’s professional outfit. It remains to be seen if either are back in MLR next season.

The Sharks have plucked an Argentine prospect from the newly-crowned champions. Tomás Casares spent the season with the New England Free Jacks but did not make a regular season appearance. The 24-year-old No8, who is US-eligible through his father, will look for more opportunities with Miami. Casares was acquired in the recently-completed expansion draft and is the first player from the list of 25 revealed to have agreed to terms with MLR’s newest team.

Former Austin winger David Still is departing the Eagles Sevens program, but he isn’t making a return to MLR. Instead the 6’3″ (1.90m) specimen, who turns 25 later this month, is leaving rugby completely and switching back to professional football. He has committed to a season in the XFL with dreams of ultimately reaching his lifelong goal of making an NFL roster.
