Mateo Carreras to join Bayonne from Newcastle Falcons next season

Mateo Carreras is into his final season under contract with the Newcastle Falcons. The season will be followed by Carreras moving from the English Premiership to the French Top 14. Canal+ Rugby report that Bayonne have signed Mateo Carreras on a three-year-deal.

The move from Newcastle to Bayonne will begin in mid 2024. It will see him playing three full seasons in France’s elite in the lead up to Rugby World Cup 2027. Mateo Carreras was Argentina’s starting left winger at Rugby World Cup 2023.

Mateo Carreras joined Emiliano Boffelli and Juan Cruz Mallía in the back-three. The trio were the regular combination. The exception was the pool match against Chile wherein rotation saw Juan Imhoff, Rodrigo Isgró and Martín Bogado starting in the back-three.

Argentina finished fourth in the World Cup. Mateo Carreras was among the best Pumas backs and let audiences know how good of a winger he is. Highlights included his hat-trick in the win over Japan and his bumping off of English defenders in the Bronze Final.

While French sources state that the contract has been finalized, the Newcastle Falcons are nonetheless still keen on retaining their flying Tucumano. Carreras is one of five Pumas at the Falcons. The others are center Matías Orlando and fellow World Cup players lock Pedro Rubiolo, tight head Eduardo Bello and center Matías Moroni.

Bello is the newcomer this season. He joins the Falcons from Saracens and previously played for Zebre in the United Rugby Championship (URC). Rubiolo arrived last season and played flanker though featured in the second-row at the World Cup. Rubiolo, Bello and Carreras all have age on their side to prepare ahead for Rugby World Cup 2027.

Carreras was well-known to Newcastle Falcons’ fans before the World Cup. He scored thirteen tries in the 2022-2023 English Premiership season for the Northern English side. He is back to play for the Falcons this coming weekend against the Harlequins. His current contract with Newcastle Falcons is a two-year-deal. It was signed in April 2022.
