Pampas Eliminate Champions Peñarol to Book home SRA Final

The 2024 Super Rugby Americas Final will be played in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Los Pampas earned the right to host the Final after eliminating the two-time defending champions, Peñarol in the first Semi Final on Friday.

The 50-27 win was a fair reflection of the Semi Final; Los Pampas were the better team defensively and offensively. The Argentine side was, nonetheless, made to work hard for the win.

A strong start from Peñarol saw veteran Teros N8 Manuel Diana scoring. The uncapped Ícaro Amarrillo converted. It was the first of three Peñarol tries for the match; Los Pampas score seven.

Fly half Joaquín de la Vega Mendía opened the scoring for the home side. He scored his tam’s opening try. His conversion was unsuccessful but he made up for it with a penalty and with it an 8-7 lead after 16 minutes.

From there Los Pampas went about extending their lead as they controlled proceedings for the bulk of the remaining there quarters of the match. Eliseo Fourcade scored before Nicolás D’Amorim was stopped meters short after a clean line break. Estanislao Carullo capitalized by scoring from a pick-and-go.

Peñarol’s response did not come until the second-half. Captain Santiago Civetta gave the Uruguayans hope but it was quickly obliterated as Ramiro Gurovich and Santiago Pernas scored rapid-fire tries. Pernas had fellow winger, Jerónimo Ulloa to thank after he made the break.

Los Pumitas fullback Benjamín Elizalde joins the scoring. He crossed for two lat tries, doing so with Joaquín Myszka scoring in between them for Peñarol. It meant a commanding victory by a difference of 23 points.
