Pumas With Wins Over the All Blacks

Argentina opened the 2024 Rugby Championship with a 38-30 win over New Zealand. For some players it was their first taste of victory against the All Blacks. For others it was a second and for five players it was a third win.

Hooker Ignacio Ruiz had his first start against New Zealand and also his first win. He was replaced by 39-year-old Agustín Creevy who won after having missed the 2020 and 2022 wins. Julián Montoya was the hooker in the other wins with Facundo Bosch and Santiago Socino being his understudies.

Elsewhere among the forwards, second-rowers Franco Molina and Pedro Rubiolo both also defeated New Zealand for the first time as did debutant Efraín Elías and replacement N8 Joaquín Oviedo. Molina was a try-scorer and Elías had an assist.

Left winger Mateo Carreras was a try scorer too. The win marked his first taste of victory over the All Blacks. Fellow Tucumán back, Tomás Albornoz was a second-half replacement. Lautaro Bazán Vélez was the only unused replacement.

Argentina now has three wins over New Zealand. The first was under Mario Ledesma in 2020, the second under Michael Cheika in 2022 and the third under Felipe Contepomi in 2024. None of the wins took place in Argentina.
