Peñarol came out 22-17 winners over Selkman in Santiago del Chile on Saturday. The match saw the Uruguayans scoring a fortuitous try one minute from full-time to claim victory. Selknam will be frustrated with the outcome but the try did see a scrum-half breaking a regulation tackle of a tight head prop. Such an incident should not happen at this level.
MATCH NOTES |
- Peñarol held a 17-7 half-time lead. The lead was built with two tries from forward power through mauls. Selknam’s first-half try saw Raimundo Martínez scoring from a lineout to maul.
- It took a long time for scoring to resume in the second-half. It did so with Martínez scoring again, this time from a set-move with him having a 20 meter run to the try zone.
- Selknam turned down three opportunities of kicks at goal to go for attacking lineouts. Peñarol did not concede tries from any of the moves.
- Selknam finally went for a kick at goal on 72 minutes. Tomás Salas made it a 17-17 scoreline.
- A draw appeared all but inevitable; however, Peñarol scored after they made a mess of their own lineout inside their own half. Santiago Álvarez picked up a loose ball and fell down only to get up and break a tackle from Baltazar Gurrichaga. Álvarez had a free run and a two on one to put Ignacio Facciolo over.
- The match-winning try was controversial as the lineout throw was undisputedly not straight.
- Peñarol are now 2nd on 27 points behind Los Pampas on 29.
- Selknam secured a bonus point to now have 24 points. They can fall below Los Dogos if the Cordobeses defeat Os Cobras well in Brazil in the final match of the round.
