Argentina had opportunities but ultimately fell short against South Africa on Thursday. The clash between the u20 teams saw the home side winning 36-25 in Port Elizabeth. The South African victory came despite Argentina having held a 20-15 lead at half-time.
Los Pumitas enjoyed a solid opening half. Consecutive lineout steals and a solid scrum helped piece together the half-time lead. Rafael Benedit was accurate with his goal-kicking while Pascal Senillosa and Bautista Lescano scored tries.
The second-half was different, despite Argentina starting with a try to captain Felipe Ledesma. The Junior Springboks added to their first-half tries scored by Haashim Pead and Demitre Erasmus. The home side ran-in three second-half tries with Pead claiming a double.
The other match in opening round of the u20 Rugby Championship was a draw. Australia and New Zealand finished 29-29. The second round sees Argentina facing New Zealand and South Africa facing Australia. Both matches will be played on Tuesday, May 06.
