Santiago Arata to play against Springboks

Santiago Arata will play against the Springboks. The Uruguayan scrum-half is currently in Cape Town, South Africa preparing with the Barbarians to face the world champions. He will become the second Uruguayan to play for the Barbarians. He follows Rodrigo Capó Ortega.

The South Africa vs Barbarians match will be played on Saturday,  June 28. It is to be the first ever home game for the Springboks against the Barbarians and the ninth match between the teams overall. The most recently match was a 31-31 draw in London in 2016.

Arata wins the Barbarians for the match outside of the international release window. He does so due to Castres’ Top 14 campaign having ended. Castres were eliminated at the barrage stage this season.

Selection for the Barbarians means Arata has a pathway to become the first Uruguayan to play against all four members of the Rugby Championship: Argentina, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.

Arata played against Australia at Rugby World Cup 2019 in Japan and against New Zealand at Rugby World Cup 2023 in France. He missed the July 2024 home test match against Los Pumas due to injury but could make up for it against Argentina in Salta on Saturday, July 19. His appearance for the Barbarians against the Springboks would tick off that box.
