Playing at home on Saturday, Brazil fell to a 45-17 defeat against the Argentina XV. The match was preparation for Os Tupis who are preparing for Rugby World Cup Qualifiers against Chile later this month. Brazil’s Men’s Senior Team are looking to follow the example of the Women’s side who are set to make their debut at a Rugby World Cup.
The Estádio Du Cambusano in Jacareí was the setting for the Brazil vs Argentina XV showdown. It is a familiar venue for players from both teams as Os Cobras play at the venue in Super Rugby Americas. Os Cobras provided the backbone of Brazil’s line-up while the Argentina XV had players from Argentina’s three teams as well as involvement from Peñarol and Yacare.
Peñarol’s Bautista Farisé was in the thick of the action for the Argentina XV. Despite having been inside center for much of Peñarol’s campaign, he played fly half. He came away with a try and five conversions for the Argentina XV.
The performance of the Argentina XV showed Brazil intensity that will be required to overcome in order for them to succeed in Rugby World Cup Qualifying. The Argentina were 24-0 ahead after 21 minutes. This came with tries to flanker Nicolás D’Amorim, prop Matías Medina, hooker Juan Manuel Vivas and winger Lautaro Cipriani. Farisé converted two of them.
Brazil opened their scoring on 26 minutes. Prop Leonel Moreno scored from a lineout to maul move. Farisé then responded with his try as the Argentina XV went into half-time with a 31-7 lead.
Brazilian flanker Adrio de Melo gave his side a dream start to the second-half. It came after good work from debuting fly half Tiago Oviedo and support from Henrique Ferreira. The Argentina XV responded with two tries. Replacement hooker Juan Ignacio Greising Revol and flanker Aitor Bildosola both scored.
The home side had the final say. de Melo scored for his second,. doing so from a pick-and-go. It will be an area of play that Os Cobras will underline as they prepare to face Los Cóndores. Brazil’s home match against Chile is their next assignment. The match will take-place on July 19 at the Estádio Nicolau Alayon in São Paulo.
