USA referee Kat Roche will take charge of two fixtures at the upcoming Rugby World Cup to be played in England. The Austin, Texas, native was an assistant match official at the tournament in New Zealand three years ago but will now become the first North American to act as a referee at a World Cup since 2014, when both the USA’s Leah Berard and Canada’s Sherry Trumball were on the senior panel.
Roche will be in the middle for Ireland’s test against Spain in Northampton on August 31, and then the Wales versus Fiji match in Exeter on September 6. She will also act as an assistant referee for Canada’s match against Fiji in York on August 23, and for New Zealand’s clash with Spain at the same venue the following day.
Canada do not officially have any match referee appointments at the tournament though Maggie Cogger-Orr has been appointed to three games. Originally from Thornhill, Ontario, she moved to Auckland in 2015 and has since represented New Zealand on the international stage.
South Africa’s Aimee Barrett-Theron will be in the middle for the tournament opener between England and the Women’s Eagles at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light on August 22. Sara Cox (England) and Natarsha Ganley (New Zealand) will referee the USA’s other pool matches. Canada’s games will be controlled by Aurélie Groizeleau (France), Hollie Davidson (Scotland), and finally Barrett-Theron.
