Colombian second-rower, Andrés Zafra captained Provence to victory over Brive on Saturday. The 39-21 win sees Provence advancing from barrage to the Semi Finals of the Pro D2 while, former Top 14 club, Brive were eliminated.
Played at a sold-out Stade Maurice-David in Aix-en-Provence, France, Zafra’s team outscored Brive by five tries to three. Zafra locked the scrum alongside former Wallabies Rugby World Cup second-rower, Izack Rodda. Additional RWC impact came in the form of Englishman Tomas Francis who played for Wales.
Zafra was not the only South American playing for Provence. Patagonian Federico Wegrzyn started at loose head prop while contemporary Puma, Francisco Coria Marchetti featured for Brive. Coria Marchetti’s team also included noteworthy names such as England’s Courtenay Lawes and Georgia’s Georges Shvelidze.
As a result of defeating Brive, Provence will face Colomiers in the Semi Final stage of the Pro D2. The winner will face either Vannes or Oyonnax in the Pro D2 Final. The winner of the Pro D2 Final will earn promotion to the Top 14 next season. The loser will face the 13th placed Perpignan in the Top 14 Access Match.
