Gonzalo Bertranou has signed for the California Legion for the 2026 Major League Rugby season. In doing so, the 32-year-old will be back for a second season of MLR. He played for RFC Los Angeles last season. That club merged with the San Diego Legion to form the California Legion.
Bertranou started in 15 matches for RFC Los Angeles in 2025. The Puma scored six tries and was named MLR Back of the Year before adding to his test match career by earning a cap for Argentina against England in the 2025 July Internationals.
The scrum-half from Mendoza, Argentina is vastly experienced with 68 test caps. He played for Los Pumas at Rugby World Cups 2019 and 2023. He has been a Puma for over a decade with his first cap coming against Paraguay in 2015.
Bertranou previously played in two elite professional rugby competitions. He played in Wales for the Dragons from 2001-2024 and transferred to Cardiff in early 2024. In addition to the United Rugby Championship (URC), Bertranou also played for the defunct Los Jaguares in Super Rugby.
A product of Los Tordos rugby club in his native Mendoza, his prominence saw him captaining Cuyo in the Argentine Provincial Championship. From there he earned selection for the Argentina XV and he captained the team in the 2015 Nations Cup.
Bertranou returns to the MLR for a second season with a stated intention of playing in a third Rugby World Cup. He is a second generation Puma. His father, Miguel Bertranou, earned 14 caps from 1988-1993.
