Argentina’s Women’s Rugby 7’s team, Las Yaguaretés, had a weekend to remember was they were crowned champions in Nairobi Kenya. In securing gold at the Nyayo National Stadium, the Argentines are well-placed after the completion of the first of three SVNS 2 tournaments.
The second and third tournaments will both take place in South America. After the completion of the SVNS 2 series in Nairobi, Montevideo and São Paulo, four teams will complete in an elite tri-tournament World Championship series in May and June.
Argentina, South Africa, Spain and China were placed as the top four in Nairobi. Argentina falling to South Africa in their final match.
Sofia González was Argentina’s stand-out performer with her being named Women’s player of the tournament. She scores in the opening match against China as did Talia Rodich (2), Maria Paula Pedrozo and Marianela Escalante.
Conversions did not matter for Argentina first up but they did in their second match, this time against Spain. The South Ameicans were 19-17 winners with Maria Brigido Chamorro, Talia Rodich, and Sofia Gonzalez scoring tries. González converted two of the tries.
Brazil has been on top of the mountain of South American Women’s Rugby for decades; however, this may be coming to an end. As Yaras fell 28-17 to Argentina in Nairobi. Tries by Camilla Carvalho, Bianca Silva, and Thalia Costa for Brazil were less than those scored by Maria Brigido Chamorro (2), Marianela Escalante, and Candela Delgado for Argentina to round out day one.
On Day two, Argentina opened with a 5-0 win over hosts Kenya. The only score of the match went to Marianela Escalante in the second minute of play.
The remaining fixture for Las Yaguaretés was against South Africa. The Africans were 12-12 winners by three tries to two. Marianela Escalante and Sofia Gonzalez were try scorers for Argentina.
