Unprecedented results played out at the São Paulo SVNS 2 tournament this weekend. Brazil were crowned Women’s Champions and Belgium Men’s Champions at there third, and final, SVNS 2 tournament this season. The São Paulo SVNS 2 follows the Nairobi SVNS 2 tournament in Kenya and the Montevideo SVNS 2 tournament in Uruguay.

When combined with the results from the Nairobi SVNS 2 and Montevideo SVNS 2 tournaments, the outcome is that Brazil (Women) and Uruguay (Men) claimed the last two remaining places on the line for the SVNS World Championship Series, which begins with the Hong Kong 7’s in April.
Brazil needed a massive improvement in São Paulo to qualify. They succeeded by overtaking China and by beating Kenya in the final match. Everything was on the line in the Brazil vs Kenya SVNS 2 Women’s Final; the prize for the winner was qualifying for the SVNS World Championship Series.
Veteran Brazilian player, Thalia Costa was named Women’s Player of the Tournament. She scored a double in the final as did teammate, Camila Carvalho.
Glory for As Yaras in São Paulo sees Brazil joining Argentina, South Africa and Spain in qualifying for the three-tournament World Championship Series with legs to be played in Hong Kong, China, Valladolid, Spain, and Bordeaux, France.
Argentina and Brazil give South America two participants in the women’s competition. Spain and South Africa are the other two women’s teams to have qualified visa SVNS 2. They join New Zealand, Australia, USA, France, Canada, Fiji, Japan and Great Britain.
Uruguay successfully joined As Yaras in qualifying. Los Teros booked their spot with a nail-bitting win over Belgium in game one of the second day in São Paulo. Belgium thus missed out on a spot and settled for a bitter-sweet outcome as the western Europeans went on to be crowned Men’s champions in São Paulo.
Belgium’s Ryan Godsmark, who is a Scotsman playing for Belgium, was named Men’s Player of the Tournament. Ultimately, as mentioned, Uruguay’s 24-19n win over Uruguay was the key men’s result.
Los Teros now join Germany, Kenya and the USA in qualifying from the SVNS 2 for the World Championship Series. Kenya booked their place on day one in São Paulo. They join South Africa, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, France, Argentina, Spain and Great Britain.
