Dogos and Lightning Strike Peñarol in Córdoba

In a match involving a significant delay, Los Dogos and lightning struck Peñarol in Córdoba on Friday. Torrential rain fell with the elements forcing the players off the field for the better part of an hour. The match was able to be played out with the hosts ultimately winning with a bonus point while preventing Peñarol from securing any.

Los Dogos led the match throughout. They converted a 20-3 half-time lead into a 33-22 victory. The half-time points came in the form of tow penalties to fly half, Julián Hernández and two penalty tries. Justo Ferrario slotted one penalty for the Uruguayan side.

The first-half ended with Peñarol down to 13-men; prop Mateo Perillo and flanker Manuel Ardao were both yellow carded for infringements that same Los Dogos awarded the penalty tries. There was more to follow in the second-half with hooker Joaquín Myszka yellow carded before Peñarol were back to 15-men.

The rain ended but the conditions were beyond slippery in the second-half. There was, nonetheless, a moment of sublime ball-handling as Luciano Avaca scored in the left corner. Mateo Soler off-loaded to Agustín de Vertiz while being tackled with de Vertiz passing the fellow winger to score out wide.

Los Dogos then went out to a 32-3 lead. Hooker Juan Greissing Revol scored what was the bonus point try, doing so from a lineout to maul. Over half an hour of play remained and Peñarol went about looking for tries to come away with a bonus point.

The Uruguayans managed to score three. The first went to Los Teros winger, Ignacio Facciolo. He chased a kick and got the favorable bounce to beat mateo Soler to the ball and score. Hooker Joaquín Myszka made it two in eight minutes as he scored from a lineout to maul. Then, with time up, replacement Jesus Porro scored from a pick-and-go.

Peñarol now look to other results to see where they will be positioned heading into next weekend. They do so with Canadians now interested more than ever as Noah Flesch, Ethan Fryer, and James Thiel all made their Super Rugby Americas debuts in Córdoba.

Next weekend sees Peñarol at home against Yacare in Montevideo and Los Dogos, also at home, awaiting Los Capibaras in a first-ever SRA meeting between the teams based in Argentina’s second and third largest cities.
