Los Capibaras claimed a bonus point win over Os Cobras in São Paulo on Sunday. The 40-19 victory reinforces the rookie Super Rugby Americas (SRA) franchise as a contender to compete in the play-off’s. It gives Los Capibaras 5 competition points while Os Cobras were denied any.
The job was done inside the opening half. Los Capibaras scored four first-half tries while conceding one to hold a 28-5 half-time lead and have the bonus point wrapped up.
The scoring began on 4 minutes. Tight Head Enzo Avaca scored from close-range for Los Capibaras. Juan Bautista Baronio added the conversion in what was a sign of things to come. Baronio converted all four opening half tries and it was the forwards who delivered for Los Capibaras.
The next try came twenty minutes after the first. Winger Lautaro Cipriani showed good foot work to score in the corner. Baronio converted from the sideline. Then, hooker Martín Vaca added his name to the scoresheet. Vaca scored after good go-forward ball from the pack.
The first half ended following an exchange of tries. Hooker Endy Willian Pinheiro scored for Os Cobras while flanker Felipe Villagrán crossed for the Argentine side. Villagrán’s try was frustrating for Os Cobras who lost prop João Lucas Marino to a yellow card.
The second-half lacked the speed and execution of the first. This was in part due to Los Capibaras having the result confirmed and also due to the replacements not having the same impact as the starters.
There were four tries scored in the second-half with both teams crossing twice each. Los Capibaras’ center Bautista Grenón scored on 53 minutes and the team based in Rosario scored a penalty try three minutes from full-time.
Os Cobras’ two second-half tries were scored by replacements. South African Mogomotsi Mokunyane and Argentine Julian Leszczynski were the scorers to ensure some respectability to the score. It was not enough for a bonus point, however.
Los Capibaras return home to prepare to face Los Pampas who will be fired-up following a heavy defeat against Los Dogos in Córdoba. Os Cobras travel to Asunción for the bottom-of-the-table clash against Yacare. The Brazilian side need a win or will fall further behind and be cemented in bottom spot.
