In a tense battle at the Estadio Hipódromo de Rosario, Los Capibaras held it together to make history against Los Pampas. The El Litoral side came out 28-21 winners over the Buenos Aires side in the first meeting between the teams in Rosario and the second overall.
The party atmosphere at the ground contributed to the occasion. Early on they had reason to shout loudly as Martín Vaca scored the opening try of the contest just minutes after kick-off. The hooker’s score was converted by Juan Bautista Baronio who left a significant mark on the match.
Baronio had two assistant tries but Man of the Match was Lucas Bur. This was a reflection of how the contest was won; Los Capibaras had the better of the contact area including the maul, scrum and lineouts.
Open play was a different story as both teams performed well with their backlines. Los Pampas fullback shone bright on 14 minutes. The former Los Pumas 7’s player sliced through the defensive line and accelerated to leave multiple defenders looking at each other.

The two early tries made for a 7-7 score at the close of the opening quarter. The second quarter saw Baronio landed a penalty for Los Capibaras in what was their only additional score before half-time.
Meanwhile, Los Capibaras were put under pressure in the second quarter. It reached a height on 37 minutes when Marcelo Toledo burst over to score for Los Pampas. Estanislao Renthel converted for a 14-10 half-time lead and did so with Los Capibaras down to 14-men for 10 minutes following the yellow carding of Los Capibaras‘ captain, Manuel Bernstein.
The turning moment came six minutes into the second-half. Waves of attacking phases from Los Capibaras’ forwards had them moving forward well inside the opposition half. Then Juan Bautista Baronio got into position to provide a short, assist pass for center Bautista Estellés. It put him in a gap and he celebrated his try.

The next try was also scored by the home side. Again it featured an assist pass from Baronio, only this time it was a wide pass out ton winger Gino Dicapua who completed a splash dive to score in the corner. The two tries meant Los Capibaras were back in front and leading 22-14.
The lead would not change hands again, though Los Pampas fought back to he 22-21 behind on 65 minutes. Following a period of Pampa control, Replacement scrum-half Alejo Lavayén went over from close range.
Baronio responded swiftly for Los Capibaras. He slotted a penalty to make it a four point lead and then added a second for a 28-21 lead with five minutes remaining on the match clock.
In hope of fighting their way back, Los Pampas looked to play dangerously. It cost them with both aforementioned penalties and again with another with one minute remaining. This time, however, Baronio’s long strike was just wide.
Play continued with the match ultimately concluding after Los Pampas knocked-on and Los Capibaras were able to control the resulting scrum and kick the ball out for victory. The result consolidates Los Capibaras in 3rd position in the standings. They are now just three points below Los Pampas who temporarily, or not, overtake Los Dogos by virtue of securing a losing bonus point.
