Los Pampas boosted their Super Rugby Americas Chances and ended those of the defending champions. The Buenos Aires franchise were 47-14 winners in Montevideo on Friday. The result eliminated Peñarol in the final round of the regular season.
The bonus point win means Los Pampas are guaranteed to finish in the Top 2. As a result, Los Pampas will have a home Semi Final. It will be a derby with Los Capibaras now guaranteed to finish the regular season in third position. Los Dogos will host the other Semi Final against either Los Tarucas or Selknam.
Los Pampas had secured the result before half-time. A dominant display had the Buenos Aires team leading 33-07. The bonus point was in the bag as was the home Semi Final.
It came with an opening quarter blitz in which Los Pampas ran-in three unanswered tries. The first came from a loose ball from the Uruguayans. Nahuel Clausen gathered it and fed the ball to Santiago Pernas who, playing out of position at outside center, showed good pace to score.
The second try was a work of art. From a lineout, the ball went left with fly half Estanislao Renthel cutting inside on an angle. He then attracted the last line of defense and passed to Clausen who scored.
Peñarol’s season was on the line and they needed to take risks to respond. It did not work out for them as Tobías Wade intercepted on his own 22 and ran untouched to score for Los Pampas on 15 minutes. Then, on 23 minutes, Marcos Camerlinckx sealed the bonus point. The tight head crashed over after a series of raids.

Peñarol opened their scoring on 34 minutes. It came from a lineout to maul only it was a winger scoring. Juan Manuel Alonso went over after Los Pampas had slowed down the advancing maul and the ball went left. It was the only Uruguayan score of the first-half.
What followed was another Pampas try. As is often the case with spectacular tries, they come against good defensive lines. This was so with rapid-fire passes from Estanislao Renthel, Santiago Pernas, and Tobías Wade culminating with Jerónimo Ulloa scoring in the left corner.
The scoring slowed down in the second-half. N8 Lucas Moresco scored to close out the third quarter. His try came from a lineout to maul. It was followed by the final Pampas score of the match with a numbers game seeing Tobias Wade over from fullback. Peñarol scored the final try with Alonso joining Wade in scoring twice.
