PNC confirmed for Canada Men as Meehan extends stay

Steve Meehan has extended his contract with Rugby Canada through the end of 2028. The Australian took charge of the Senior Men’s XVs team in 2025 following the departure of Kingsley Jones. While his charges won just one of their nine tests, the victory over the USA in Calgary confirmed Canada’s return to the World Cup in 2027 after missing out in 2023.

Meehan’s immediate focus will now be on the flagship XV-a-side tournament, but Rugby Canada says he will also increase involvement with the Men’s 7s program. After missing out on qualification for the restructured World Sevens Series, the team again struggled this past year. Despite the challenges, they are expected to qualify for the 2028 Olympics in regional competition. With the games to be hosted in Los Angeles, the USA have an automatic berth leaving the North American slot up for grabs.

Meanwhile nine tests have been confirmed for the Canadian Men in 2026. Three each will be played in July and November as part of the new World Rugby Nations Cup competition. As first reported by Neil Davidson of the Canadian Press, the team will also compete in the Pacific Nations Cup with away games against Japan, Fiji, and an opponent to be determined.
