Super Rugby Americas 2025 Semi Final 2 – Peñarol vs Selknam

Selknam travel to Montevideo, Uruguay to take-on Peñarol in the second Semi Final of Super Rugby Americas 2025. El Clásico will follow Semi Final 1 between Los Pampas and Los Dogos in Buenos Aires, also on Friday. The 9pm kick-off for the match will be friendly for Chileans who can tune-in to see their professional rugby team take to the field at 8pm, Chile Standard Time.

Selknam are back in the Semi Finals after not featuring in 2023 or 2024.
Peñarol defeated Selknam in the 2022 Final and successfully defended their title in 2023.
Peñarol is on a seven match winning-streak against Selknam.
Peñarol won the most recent meeting between the sides with a controversial finish.
Selknam Head Coach Jake Mangin has been suspended for insulting referee Damián Schneider, and assistant referee Esteban Filipanics. Mangin will not be involved in the Semi Final at the Estadio Charrúa.
First-choice center Matías Garafullic was red carded for foul play in Selknam’s win over Los Dogos. He has been cleared and is free to play in the Semi Final.
Uruguayan captain Andrés Vilaseca is notably absent. He retuned from injury in the final round.
Portuguese Rugby World Cup 2023 player, Manuel Cardoso Pinto starts at fullback for Peñarol.
In addition to the Portuguese fullback, Peñarol has five Argentines in their team. They are: Juan Francisco Aguirre, Bautista Viero, Bautista Farise, Bautista Vidal, and Tomás Di Biase.
Selknam’s foreign-legion involves two players: Juan Cruz Reyes and Agustín Toth.
All 15 of Selknam’s starting line-up are capped by Chile.
Peñarol is coming-off a home loss against Los Pampas.
Selknam is in red-hot form. The Chileans needed to win their final three matches and they successfully did so by beating Los Pampas in Buenos Aires, Yacare in Santiago and Los Dogos in Córdoba.

PREDICTION

Both regular season matches between the teams were tight contests. They could have gone either way but both were won by Peñarol. In doing so, the Uruguayans extended their excellent record against the Chileans. Home advantage will be a factor helping Peñarol, although with the conditions encouraging an open-running contest, Selknam will be able to focus on scrums. The scrum has been a strength of Selknam’s and a weakness of Peñarol’s this year. Peñarol enter the contest as favorites.
