In match that went down to the wire in Montevideo, Peñarol scraped past Yacare to win 25-24. The Friday night battle was tight throughout. Peñarol held a 13-9 half-time lead and were forced to defend until the very end to secure victory.
The early play favored Yacare. Fly half Joaquín Lamas slotted two penalties in the opening quarter before Justo Ferrario opened the scoring for the hosts with a penalty of his own.
The first try of the match came early in the second quarter. Peñarol scrum-half Alejando Molinas got the better of his opponent, Juan Cruz Strada, with a dummy pass to score. Justo Ferrario’s conversion attempt was wide.
The remaining first-half points were penalties. Ferrario added three points for Peñarol on 36 minutes and Lamas responded for Yacare on 39 minutes.
The Paraguayan side regained the lead early in the second-half. From a dominant scrum, center Francisco Gaspes hit the line with pace to score. Peñarol’s response was swift with hooker Joaquín Myszka scoring from a maul.
Flanker Manuel Ardao scored a fortuitous try on 61 minutes. From scrum-half the flanker ran and kicked through, regathering with a lucky bounce and getting over before the defense could reform.
Lamas got Yacare back within range with a 68th minute penalty. He then put in an assist try with Juan González scoring in the left corner. The kick was perfectly waited; however, the conversion was unsuccessful. It meant one point separated the teams and it remained so until the completion of the contest.
SRA takes a break next weekend for Easter. Week 7, played on April 10-13, sees Yacare at home against Los Dogos and Peñarol facing Los Pampas away in Buenos Aires.
