Selknam delivered at home on Saturday. After a diabolical away performance one week earlier in Córdoba, Selknam came alive against Los Capibaras in Santiago. The Chileans completed a bonus point victory, beating the Super Rugby Americas (SRA) rookie team 27-17.
The visitors started with a miraculous try. From a box-kick, Selknam let the ball bounce and Gino DiCapua snatched it up to run over for a gift score. The conversion was wide.
Selknam were unhappy with letting in a soft score and quickly hit-back. Prop Javier Carrasco went over for an 8th minute try. Matías Garafulic landed the conversion in an otherwise off-target half from the kicking tee. Garafulic missed two conversions and a penalty in the opening half. It meant Selknam were 17-8 up at half-time rather than a possible lead of 24-8.
Selknam’s second and third tries came in quick succession. First, Rodrigo Fernández scored down the left and then Nicolás Saab added the third Selknam try only a matter of minutes later. Ignacio Dogliani got three points back for Los Capibaras with a penalty just before the 30 minute mark.
The second-half featured a potential comeback from Los Capibaras. Dogliani added two penalties before Selknam responded with their fourth try. Álvaro Castro scored in the right corner to ensure a bond sopping for four tries. The conversion was over this time.
A prior of 25 minutes without points followed. Replacement Juan Bautista Baronio then landed a penalty on 73 minutes. It meant a seven point deficit and thus an opportunity to, at least, snatch a draw.
Selknam were forced to dig deep to hold out Los Capibaras. It involved losing Santiago Montagner to a yellow card for tackling a player without the ball. The winning moment came with two minutes remaining as Selknam won a penalty. Matías Garafulilc landed it to put Selknam ahead by 10.
Selknam remain in Chile for the week. Their week 6 match will be against Los Pampas. Meanwhile, Los Capibaras return across the Andes and head to Córdoba to face Los Dogos.
